TAXINOMY OF SCIENCES IN AL-MAGHANIM FI AL-KHALAS MIN AL-MAZALIM BY SHEIKH JA’ID IBN KHAMIS AL-KHARUSI

Abstract

This paper examines the definition, classifications, and taxonomy of sciences as presented in the manuscript al-Maghanim fi al-Khalas min al-Madhalim by Shaykh Ja'id ibn Khamis al-Kharusi. Focusing on Omani Ibadi thought during the 12^th-13^th H centuries, the paper first clarifies the notion of 'science' and its foundational principles. It then identifies the types of sciences with particular attention to the sciences of mukashafa (spiritual unveiling) and mu'amala (religious conduct). The study employs a critical-analytical method and closely follows Shaykh Ja'id's entries in the first and second chapters of the manuscript al-Maghanim. Among its findings are that Shaykh Ja'id method of defining and classifying the sciences is primarily component-based rather than essence-based; that he paid considerable attention to division, subdivision, and exemplification across various sciences and categories, indicating an early formative stage aimed more at defining 'science' than at critiquing the classifications of earlier authorities; and that he was innovative in many terms, divisions, and sub-divisions, not strictly adhering to established conventions in the Islamic disciplinary tradition. The study recommends increased scholarly attention to the classification of the sciences, its foundations, and components as a central pillar of epistemological theory in  Islamic thought, and it encourages further investigation of the concept, categories, and legal concequences of injustice (Dhulm) in al-Maghanim, since that theme is central to the work.

يدرس هذا البحث حدّ العلوم وأقسامها ومراتبها في مخطوط المغانم في الخلاص من المظالم للشيخ جاعد بن خميس الخروصي. ويعالج إشكاليّة تصنيفيّة العلوم في الفكر الإباضي العماني في القرنين الهجريين الثاني عشر والثالث عشر. درس البحث أوّلا بيان العلم وأسسه؛ ثمّ بيّن، ثانيا، أنواع العلوم، مركّزا على علميْ المكاشفة والمعاملة. وسلك البحث المنهج التحليلي النقدي متتبّعا ما دوّنه الشيخ في البابين الأوّل والثاني من مخطوط المغانم. وتوصّل إلى جملة من النتائج منها أنّ منهج الشيخ جاعد في حدّ العلوم وتصنيفها قام أساسا على التعريف بالمكوّنات بدل التعريف بالماهية؛ وأنه قد اهتمّ بالتقسيم والتفريع والتمثيل لمختلف العلوم وفي مختلف الأقسام مما يشي بأنّه يؤصّل لمرحلة تأسيسيّة تسعى للتعريف بالعلم أكثر من سعيها لمناقشة تصنيفات القدامى؛ ومنها أنّ الشيخ كان مجدّدا في كثير من الاصطلاحات والتقسيمات والتفريعات، فلم يراع المعهود في دراسة العلوم في التراث الإسلامي، ولم يتقيّد به. وتوصي الدّراسة بمزيد الاهتمام بتصنيفية العلوم وأسسها ومكوّناتها باعتبارها الركن الأساسي في نظريّة المعرفة في الفكر الإسلامي؛ وتدعو الباحثين إلى دراسة مفهوم الظلم وأقسامه وأحكامه في المغانم نظرا إلى أنه مركز الكتاب.
